Non-Destructive Assay of Plutonium and Uranium with the RPI LSDS

چکیده
Lead Slowing-Down Spectroscopy (LSDS) is a candidate for non-destructive assay of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) [4]. Research was collaborated via the Material Protection, Accounting, and Control Technology (MPACT) campaign under the Department of Energy. Researchers include: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and Idaho State University (ISU). The development of an LSDS assay system would provide a characterization method for the direct assay of the fissile content of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) to the benefit of nuclear safeguards and nuclear material accountability. Additionally, the LSDS could be used to determine the burn up level for the purpose of reprocessing and recycling SNF. The three main tasks of this project involve development of an algorithm for interpreting fissile masses, development of suitable detectors, and the experimental benchmarking of the system.

Nondestructive Assay Measurements Using the RPI Lead Slowing-Down Spectrometer
The use of a lead slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) is considered as a possible option for nondestructive assay of fissile material of used nuclear fuel. The primary objective is to quantify fissile isotopes, particularly 239Pu and 235U, via a direct measurement distinguishing them through their characteristic fission spectra in the LSDS. In this paper, we present several assay measurements perf...

One of the main characteristics of heavy water research reactors is their high production of plutonium. This work demonstrates the possibility of reduction of plutonium production and other actinides in heavy water research reactors. Among the many ways for reducing plutonium production in a heavy water reactor, in this research, changing the fuel from natural uranium to thorium-uranium mixed f...

The use of a Lead Slowing-Down Spectrometer (LSDS) is considered as a possible option for nondestructive assay of fissile material in used (spent) nuclear fuel. The primary objective is to quantify the remaining fissile content of the fuel consisting mainly of Pu and U. The characterization of spent fuel is particularly important for nuclear safeguards and for determining the fuel burn-up level...
